With the increase in the frequency of gun buyback programs in liberal jurisdictions, people who own 3D printers may be set for a massive business opportunity.
In New York, where Attorney General Letitia James presides gun buyback program is active, a man used his $200 3D printer to earn $21,000 in gift cards from New York taxpayers.
James was rather upset with this brazen attempt at gaming the system, and a spokesperson from her office made sure to make those feeling known.
“It’s shameful that this individual exploited a program that has successfully taken thousands of guns off the streets to protect our communities from gun violence,” said the spokesperson from the New York Attorney General’s office.
“We have partnered with local police throughout the state to recover more than 3,500 guns, and one individual’s greedy behavior won’t tarnish our work to promote public safety”, they continued. “We have adjusted our policies to ensure that no one can exploit this program again for personal gain.”
According to the man who pulled off this genius scheme, who would like to be called “Kem”, these events “don’t actually reduce crime whatsoever.”
“I 3D-printed a bunch of lower receivers and frames for different kinds of firearms,” said Kem while he recounted the ordeal.
He then drove 6 hours to reach the gun buyback station in Utica, New York.
“And he sees the tote and says, ‘how many firearms do you have?’ And I said ‘110’”, Kem says.
For the rest of the afternoon, Kem negotiated with the buyback officials over the price that they would pay for his newly minted firearms.
“And it ended with the guy and a lady from the budget office finally coming around with the 42 gift cards and counting them in front of me,” he said. “$21,000 in $500 gift cards,” the amount totaled, according to Kem.
According to the officials at the New York Attorney General’s office, the gun buyback was a large and sweeping success.
Kem, however, sees it differently.
“I’m sure handing over $21,000 in gift cards to some punk kid after getting a bunch of plastic junk was a rousing success,” he said. “Gun buybacks are a fantastic way of showing, number one, that your policies don’t work, and, number 2, you’re creating perverse demand. You’re causing people to show up to these events and they don’t actually reduce crime whatsoever.”
Many gun owing Americans would agree with Kem on this statement. It is interesting that this buyback program actually raised the production of guns, at least for this Kem who saw a massive business opportunity.
Gun buybacks have already been a hot topic among people who seek to lower gun violence in America.
A retired NYPD sergeant told CNN that gun buybacks are “good theater. But it’s not helping deal with gangs and drug dealers and everyone else using the guns.”
Many people who have worked in law enforcement fail to see the merit of taking guns off the street through an optional gun buyback program.
