Some people are just evil. The DEA has recently been warning about people targeting children and young adults by using pills in form of candies filled with Fentanyl. Fentanyl is an extremely dangerous substance causing thousands of deaths in the United States.
A warning was recently issued by the Drug Enforcement Administration regarding the “alarming” trend of rainbow fentanyl in the United States. Several forms of rainbow fentanyl were seized by authorities, including pills, powders, and sidewalk chalk-like blocks.
“Rainbow fentanyl—fentanyl pills and powder that come in a variety of bright colors, shapes, and sizes—is a deliberate effort by drug traffickers to drive addiction amongst kids and young adults. The men and women of the DEA are relentlessly working to stop the trafficking of rainbow fentanyl and defeat the Mexican drug cartels that are responsible for the vast majority of the fentanyl that is being trafficked in the United States.”
Following the seizure of 15,000 pills disguised as candy in Connecticut, former DEA special operations director Derek Maltz warned parents to educate themselves about the national fentanyl crisis, said NY Post.
On “Fox & Friends”, Maltz said, “We’re seeing an unprecedented amount of kids dying as young as 13 years old.”
“And we know now, the DEA says, that 40% of the pills contain a potentially lethal dose of fentanyl.”
In recent years, the United States has seen an increase in fentanyl overdose deaths – particularly accidental fentanyl overdoses.
A DEA official estimates that the lethal dose of fentanyl is the size of a pencil tip. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, fentanyl is now the leading cause of overdose deaths, right up there with other synthetic opioids. The number of overdoses caused by synthetic opioids – including fentanyl – increased by over 56 percent from 2019 to 2020.
According to Maltz, drug cartels are taking advantage of teenagers’ obsession with social media platforms to sell their drugs. Maltz noted that the children targeted in these sales may simply be unaware.
The DEA and other nonprofit organizations can provide parents with information about what to look for at Halloween, according to Maltz. “They have to be proactive,” he declared. “It’s deadly fentanyl, and it’s flooding our streets like we’ve never seen.”
If parents discover drugs in suspicious candy wrappers, Maltz advised them to contact the police immediately. He also added that the material should be disposed of immediately. “Stay away from it because it’s poison. It really is dangerous,” he stated.
As a result of the crisis, schools ought to get involved, and the Biden administration needs to act immediately.
Over the past five years, the number of synthetic opioid-related deaths in the U.S. has increased from 6,000 in 2015 to more than 63,000 in 2021, mostly caused by fentanyl. Fentanyl deaths have led to morgue space shortages in some counties.
