“Continuation of Political Witch Hunt”: Trump Sounds Off on Newest Lawsuit

New York Attorney General Letitia James recently announced a new lawsuit against Trump and his kids, alleging that the Trump Organization committed fraud in estimating its assets. One part of the complaint, for instance, alleges that:

By using the fraudulent valuation methods and assumptions described above, the Trump Organization was able to inflate the value of Trump Vegas in each of the years from 2013 to 2016. Eric Trump, invoking his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, refused to answer questions related to his participation in the drafting of each of the 2013 through 2016 Statements.

Another claims that he overstated the value of some rent-controlled apartments and estimated their value as being far higher than the appraiser estimated, then claiming that the Trump Organization did that despite knowing that the apartments were rent-controlled, saying:

The Trump Organization was well aware of the rent-stabilized nature of many units at the property, as any landlord would be. Indeed, Donald Trump, Jr. testified that the rent-stabilized tenants at the building were, ‘the bane of [his] existence for quite some time.’”

Well, rather than tamely roll over or attempt to downplay the whole thing, Trump is hitting back hard, alleging that it’s just political persecution.

He did son on FNC’s Hannity, pointing to AG James’ longstanding hatred of him and calls for wielding the state against him, saying:

She campaigned on it four years ago. It was a vicious campaign, and she just talked about Trump, and we are going to indict him, and we are going to get him. She knew nothing about me. I never heard of her.

“She said that we are going to get him. Her whole campaign was based off that. Then she came after us. We have been going over this for years. I actually thought because our values are really high, the company is great. I built a great company. You take places like this in so many other places.

“I have like this, frankly, just among the finest places anywhere in the world. I actually thought that they would never bring the case, and she brought it. The reason I thought was because she didn’t have a case. I was of the impression that she wanted to settle, but I had a problem because how do you pay something, even if the small amount of money if you’re not guilty? This is just a continuation of the witch hunt that began when I came down the escalator of Trump Tower.”

Former President Trump also defended his taking documents home to Mar-a-Lago and explained why it was legal for him to do so during his interview with Hannity, saying:

“There doesn’t have to be a process, as I understand it. You know, there’s different people say different things. As I understand, there doesn’t have to be. If you’re the president of the United States, you can declassify just by saying, ‘It’s declassified.’ Even by thinking about it. Because you are sending it to Mar-a-Lago or where ever you are sending it. There doesn’t have to be a process. There can be a process, but there doesn’t have to be. You’re the president. You make that decision. So when you send it, it is declassified. I declassified everything.
