A top executive at the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation (GNF) has been accused of stealing more than $10 million dollars from the organization, in a lawsuit filed last week.
The lawsuit is filed against Shalomyah Bowers, a board of directors member for the organization, and alleges that he stole the $10 million for personal use.
The GNF, along with Bower’s consulting firm, is also being sued in this case.
BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullors brought Bowers on board to help guide the GNF, according to the lawsuit.
As CNN explains, the GNF was invented by Cullors “as an administrative organization to raise funds to provide financial support for local-level community efforts of BLM Grassroots.”
The suit claims, “while BLM leaders and movement workers were on the street risking their lives, Mr. Bowers remained in his cushy offices devising a scheme of fraud and misrepresentation to break the implied-in-fact contract between donors and BLM.”
The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, along with Bowers, released a statement denouncing the accusations.
“They would rather take the same steps of our white oppressors and utilize the criminal legal system which is propped up by white supremacy to solve movement disputes,” the group said in reference to the lawsuit.
“In particular, Melina Abdulla and BLMGR’s storytelling concerning the current BLMGNF Board is harmful, divisive, and false. It only gives fodder to right-wing media’s clear agenda of sowing distrust and division among Black folks, and it is in deep contrast to abolitionist values and the fight for Black liberation.”
Leave it to member of the Black Lives Matter organization to compare this lawsuit, which is filed by black people and is levied against other black people, to white supremacy.
As usual, their claims of racism are used to divert attention away from the real story and garner sympathy from those who will believe anything that the organization tells them.
Even after being asked to stop fundraising, “Mr. Bowers continues to fraudulently raise money from unsuspecting donors passing himself off as the organization that is doing the work of BLM, padding his own pockets and that of his associates at the cost of BLM’s reputation,” according to the lawsuit.
This is not the first time that a Black Lives Matter executive has been under fire for using the group’s donations for personal gain and luxury.
According to the New York Post in April of last year, co-founder of BLM Patrisse Cullors purchased four homes in the US for $3.2 million.
These purchases included a $1.4 million home in Malibu with “soaring ceilings, skylights and plenty of windows” to show off the canyon-view.
She also bought a home near Atlanta that included a private airplane hangar, which is one of the most extravagant amenities that a home could have.
While it is a shame to see these charitable donations being used for individual gain, it is hard to avoid saying “I told you so.”
Many conservatives, and many democrats, have been wary of BLM since the beginning as it has been clear that there is potential for massive personal financial gain for those at the organization’s head.
