This past weekend, Jim Harbaugh, the head football coach at the University of Michigan, was asked about his views on abortion, and he did not mince words when he responded.
According to the FW, Harbaugh stated during his keynote presentation at a “Right to Life” event held in Michigan on Sunday that he believes in having the courage to let the unborn be born. The former coach that led the 49ers to the Superbowl would go on to say he believes in having the guts to let the unborn be born and would go on to express how important to show both life and death the same amount of love and respect. These beliefs are what drive me, and they are driven by both my faith and my science.

After that, he continued talking about the effort to get access to abortions codified into Michigan law, and according to Faith Wire Harbaugh would say:
“Passions can make the process messy, but when combined with respect, it ultimately produces the best outcomes,” said Harbaugh. “This process has been passionate and messy, but I have faith in the American people to ultimately develop the right policies and laws for all lives involved. I recognize one’s personal thinking regarding morality of a particular action may differ from their thinking on whether government should make that action illegal. There are many things one may hold to be immoral, but the government appropriately allows because of some greater good or personal or constitutional right.”
“Ultimately, I don’t believe that is the case with abortion,” the coach continued. “Yes, there are conflicts between the legitimate rights of the mother and the rights of the unborn child. One resolution might involve incredible hardship for the mother, family and society. Another results in the death of an unborn person.”
The remarks made by Harbaugh come just a few weeks after the Supreme Court of the United States reversed its decision in Roe v. Wade, the seminal case from 1973 that established a statewide legal framework for abortion. The judges’ decision in June to rule in favor of a Mississippi law that prohibits abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy resulted in the reversal of this decision.

In November, Michigan residents will likely vote on whether or not to codify abortion rights into the state’s legal code.
When Harbaugh used to play as a quarterback in the NFL for the Colts and Bears whenever reporters would interview him, the first thing he would say would be something like “I’d like to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for making all of this possible.” Then he would continue with the interview and address any subject that had been given to him.
As Harbaugh’s fame grows quicker and now as the money is coming in a lot more too, it’s great to see Harbaugh still proclaiming his faith on the big stage no matter how much backlash he receives from it.
