What do leftist teachers hate the idea of more than anything? Teaching tame, moderately conservative to moderately liberal classes in American history and civics, apparently, as they’re freaking out over the idea of doing just that in Florida, where Governor DeSantis is essentially demanding they teach the sort of history courses you would have found in a classroom of the 1990s.
Eric at Trending Politics reported on that attack on Marxist-dominated education system, noting that DeSantis is attempting to take on the 1619 Project, saying:
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced he is fighting back against the bogus 1619 Project, Social Justice & Critical Race Theory indoctrination, with the truth.
The popular Republican governor has decided it’s time for teachers in the Sunshine State, to stop the nonsense and teach real, historically verifiable history again.
DeSantis announced that he was establishing a Civic Literacy Excellence Initiative to give better education to Florida students.
Part of it includes training Florida teachers on the true history of America.
Indeed it does, or at least something as closely approximating true American history as conservatives can probably defend teaching right now.
Governor DeSantis said, describing the program:
“We have a responsibility to ensure our students are prepared to be great citizens. That is why we created a new civics curriculum in Florida and are making this important investment of more than $106 million. By July 4, 2026, our country’s 250th anniversary, we will make sure every K-12 student in Florida is educated with our new civics curriculum.”
Similarly, Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran, speaking on the program, said:
“Through Governor DeSantis’ bold leadership, Florida is a national model for high quality civics education that benefits both students and educators. The Florida Civics and Debate Initiative has been a massive success, with 161 schools from 48 districts and more than 5,500 students expected to participate in the 2021-2022 school year. The new Civics Literacy Excellence Initiative also compliments recent legislation that strengthens Florida’s commitment to every child receiving a world class civics education that prepares them to be great citizens who will lead successful lives.”
So DeSantis is demanding high-quality education and is trying to ensure that what history and civics lessons Florida’s kids learn are at least closer in tone and idea to the 1776 Report than 1619 Project, a far from radical idea considering that, while the 1776 Report was generally pro-America and pro-Founding Fathers, the whole argument pushed by it is also anti-confederate and pro-MLK/Frederick Douglas/etc.
In other words, DeSantis isn’t taking a radical step. He’s just pushing back on the cultural Marxism and trying to return to an education system as might have been around before the left so openly hated America and its roots.
But the leftists are panicking regardless of the truth. The Miami Herald, which has some of the slides involved in the new teaching program if you want to check them out, reports that:
When Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the initiative last April, he said that it was designed to “ensure our students are prepared to be great citizens.” But several South Florida high school educators who sat through the first three-day session last week said they were alarmed that the state’s teaching methodology was infused with a Christian and conservative ideology.
So once again DeSantis has triggered the left by doing something pretty tame and moderate. Good for him.
