A sixteen-year-old teenager in Mississippi had the chance to show his courage and be a hero and he did so well, throwing himself into a rescue of a gaggle of three drowning girls and a police officer caught in the strong currents of a raging river.
That teenager, Corion Evans, was driving one night when, all of the sudden, he saw a car drive off the road and plunge into the river. Apparently, the driver was confused or misled by the GPS instructions and so turned into the river and drove off the road.
But, unlike the scene from “The Office” where Michael Scott does just that, this accident wasn’t humorous; the lives of the car’s occupants were at risk, as the car had gone about 20 feet out into the river and was sinking into its murky depths, with the occupants inside.
Evans, describing that random and shocking turn of events that he saw while driving, said “They drove straight under the water. Like, only a little bit of the car was still above the water.”
But, unlike many others in his generation that would have just whipped out their phones and started filming, Evans rushed to the rescue and did his best to help. WLOX, reporting on that part of the story, said:
Evans said he tossed his shoes, shirt, phone and jumped in. One of his friends, Karon “KJ” Bradley, also jumped in and helped get the girls to the top of their vehicle.
“I was just like, ‘I can’t let none of these folks die. They need to get out the water’. So, I just started getting them,” he said. “I wasn’t even thinking about nothing else.”
Evans, a Pascagoula High student, said he’s been swimming since he was about three years old.
Early Sunday morning, he was at the right place at the right time with the right skills.
“I was behind them trying to keep them above water and swim with them at the same time,” he said.
Those victims were grateful, with one posting on Facebook that Evans “saved my life right before my last breath.”
And it wasn’t just the three girls in the car that he saved. There was also a police officer that had jumped in to help but then found himself in trouble in the river, so Evans rushed to help him too. Describing that, he said:
“I turned around. I see the police officer. He’s drowning. He’s going underwater, drowning, saying, ‘Help!” So, I went over there. I went and I grabbed the police officer and I’m like swimming him back until I feel myself I can walk.”
His mother, proud of him for obvious reasons, said, again according to WLOX, “I was really proud of Corion because he wasn’t just thinking about himself. He was trying to really get all those people out the water,” she said. “I’m glad nothing happened to him while he was trying to save other people’s lives.”
The local police department commended his bravery and quick reaction as well, saying:
“The police department and I commend Mr. Evans’s bravery and selflessness he displayed by risking his own safety to help people in danger. If Mr. Evans had not assisted, it could have possibly turned out tragically instead of all occupants rescued safely.”
Were only more Americans like that and so willing to rush to the rescue!
