Pressure from LGBTQ advocates has evolved over the years. What started out as a call for tolerance was eventually embraced, becoming part of mainstream American culture. ‘You do your thing, we’ll do ours,’ was the mindset. But soon after tolerance was instilled came the demand for acceptance. It was no longer satisfactory to merely tolerate those living such lifestyles, it wasn’t enough to simply live and let live and ensure no one was discriminated against, there was an insistence that everyone accepts LGBTQ.
Now, acceptance has evolved into celebration. Of course, you tolerate and accept LGBTQ, but that’s inadequate. You must celebrate our lifestyle. You must march in Pride Month parades, fly Pride flags from your flagpoles, and change the backgrounds of your social media profiles to include rainbow imagery.
We see it everywhere. Friends who had previously been reasonable, social moderates now go on days-long Facebook rants denouncing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for the nerve of demanding that schoolteachers in his state refrain from telling five-year-old girls that they might really be little boys.
But no matter how aggressively the LGBTQ mob pushes their agenda, and regardless of how many “open-minded” moderates suddenly believe that men can become pregnant, the facts remain. Reality doesn’t care about emotion, and institutions that strive to be guardians of morality have an obligation to call out depravity. And while we’ve seen so many of these institutions disregard those obligations, this week we’ve seen at least one institution, the Catholic Diocese of Worcester, stick to its guns.
According to the Boston Globe:
“Because it flies the Black Lives Matter and Pride flags, Nativity School of Worcester can no longer call itself Catholic. Bishop Robert J. McManus brought the hammer down on the middle school this week, after school officials rejected his demand that the flags — which had flown outside Nativity for more than a year before the bishop objected — be taken down.
‘The flying of these flags in front of a Catholic school sends a mixed, confusing and scandalous message to the public about the Church’s stance on these important moral and social issues,’ McManus wrote.
Effective immediately, he wrote, Nativity is prohibited from identifying itself as a Catholic school. Mass and sacraments are no longer permitted on school premises, or in any building in the Diocese if Nativity sponsors them.”
For the purposes of this discussion, let’s set aside the topic of the BLM flag to be debated at a later date, and let’s instead address the idea of a Catholic school flying the Pride flag.
Catholic catechism regarding sexuality is clear. Sex should take place between two married people with the express intent of producing children. Sex outside of marriage, or merely for purposes of recreation, is not acceptable. Forget about what the Old Testament says about “a man lying with another man” for now, though that message is very clear. Since gay sex cannot be engaged in with the goal of conception, obviously, it is in direct conflict with the church’s instructions.
The Catholic church doesn’t just have a problem with unmarried, non-procreational lust by gay folks, they’ve got a problem with unmarried, non-procreational lust for all of us. It’s wrong, the church tells us, which is why the church also opposes contraceptives. Two thousand years of church teachings stand behind this position.
Are there not Catholics that engage in extramarital intimacy? Of course, there are, but when they do so they are sinning, and they are violating God’s laws. When the educators at the Nativity School fly the Pride flag, they’re not just somehow signaling tolerance or perhaps forgiveness for the sinners amongst us, they are openly promoting LGBTQ lifestyles. They are celebrating homosexuality and the rest of it.
School officials have indicated that they are appealing the bishop’s decision, and it will be interesting to see what happens with those efforts. Dioceses tend to have broad authority and autonomy with such matters, but we do have a Holy Father in Pope Francis who consistently signals leftward shifts for the church. Let’s hope that this is one situation where the pontiff recognizes the need for a commitment to decency.
