In December 2020, shortly after it became clear that Joe Biden would indeed be inaugurated as the 46th President of the United States, he continued with a familiar narrative when he stated, “The integrity of our elections remains intact. Now it is time to turn the page, to unite, to heal.” During the campaign and prior to the election, when Biden wasn’t demonizing Republicans and depicting Donald Trump as the Anti-Christ out of one side of his mouth, he was advocating for a big, nationwide group hug out of the other.
Now, through almost seventeen months of his presidency, ask yourself: Has President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party succeeded in uniting and healing America? Have they even tried? But before you answer, hold that thought.
At local levels, we see examples of political division at every turn, and virtually every instance is an example of intolerance and disdain from the left. A conservative group of women in Raleigh known as Moms for Freedom had reservations at a local restaurant called Wye Hill Kitchen and Brewery for their happy hour on Friday, but the operators of the restaurant canceled those reservations after social media trolls pointed out their conservative ideology.
But the conflicts between left and right aren’t merely limited to the nixing of dinner reservations, they’re becoming increasingly dangerous.
This past week we became aware of an attempted assassination by a leftwing activist of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Considering the horror of the recent murders of 19 school children and 2 teachers in Uvalde, Texas, a massacre about which Biden and Democrats have been exceedingly vocal in calling for gun control, one might expect Biden to have been forceful and conspicuous in denouncing the plot against Kavanaugh.
But was he? Did Biden do anything to unite, heal, or even lower the temperature after the news? Has anyone heard a peep from Biden about the planned killing of Kavanaugh? Or have we heard crickets?
This brings us to this bit of news. The pro-abortion group known as Ruth Sent Us has been militant in its rhetoric, and downright threatening. With the exception of a temporary suspension of the group’s TikTok account last month, there’s been virtually no accountability for the group. Their Twitter account is still active and as extreme as ever, and no prominent Democrats have come out and denounced the group. Then on Tuesday, we became aware of the radical group’s targeting of Justice Amy Cone-Barrett’s family and church.
According to Fox News, a tweet from Ruth Sent Us stated the following:
“If you’re in the DC metro area, join us. Our protests at Barrett’s home moved the needle to this coverage. Falls Church is a People of Praise stronghold. She sends her seven kids to a People of Praise school that she sat on the Board of Directors for. She attends church DAILY.”
Did President Biden, Vice-President Harris, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, or any other Democrat call out the group? Did they denounce Ruth Sent Us? Or did they condone the behavior with their silence?
Let’s imagine for a moment if there had been an assassination plot against leftwing Justice Elena Kagan by a far-right wacko: Do you think there would have been denunciations from both sides of the aisle and nonstop media coverage? And what if a group like the Proud Boys had published information about Justice Kentanji Brown Jackson’s church and where her kids go to school. Would have drawn the ire of Biden, Democrats, and their media?
So, back to our original questions: Has President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party succeeded in uniting and healing America? Have they even tried?
