Well, we’re all going to have to find a new source of entertainment. Why? Because the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard case that was full of so many head-scratch-inducing, eyebrow-raising, and laugh-out-loud funny is finally over, with the jury determining that Heard lost and Depp won.
Apparently, the jury, though it sided with Depp, didn’t give him the full $50 million he was demanding, but rather “only” $15 million dollars. Hopefully, her lawyers got paid up front, as that’s still quite a bit of money! She did, however, win one of her defamation claims against Depp, but the amount was significantly smaller than what Depp won. The New York Post, describing the math of the damages and who ended up winning, reported that:
The jury ruled that Amber Heard defamed Johnny Depp in all three of the actor’s claims. They awarded him $10 million in damages and $5 million in punitive damages.
Judge Penny Azcarate informed the court that state law limits punitive damages to $350,000, meaning Depp was awarded a total of $10.35 million.
The jurors also said Depp defamed Heard in just one of her three claims, awarding her $2 million in damages and no money in punitive damages.
Subtracting Heard’s award from Depp’s total, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star leaves the case with $8.35 million.
As a reminder, the case began when Depp sued over what he claimed was defamation, demanding the sum of $50 million dollars. In his view, a 2018 op-ed that Heard had the ACLU ghost-write for her and then publish in the Washington Post, an article that outrageously accused him of domestic abuse, harmed his movie career. Heard, acting crazy as ever, countersued for $100 million.
It was always going to be a hard case for Heard to win, even in the anti-male US court system, as it seemed far more like she abused Johnny than he abused her. Still, she tried to fight the allegations in court and so America was entertained for weeks as the crazy couple ranted and raved, exposed the ridiculous things they did to each other, and outed each other in embarrassing stories.
Heard, giving a statement following the verdict and announcement of damages, said:
“The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband.”
Fortunately, feelings count for little and facts for much in America’s courtrooms, at least most of the time, so her feelings about it don’t matter and Johnny won.
In any case, she continued her post-defeat statement, saying:
“I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women. It is a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously.
“Johnny’s attorneys succeeded in getting the jury to overlook the key issue of freedom of speech and ignore evidence that was so conclusive that we won in the UK.
“I’m sad I lost this case. But I am sadder still that I seem to have lost a right I thought I had as an American — to speak freely and openly.”
