Joe Rogan, in a recent episode with MMA fighter Josh Barnett, tore into Spotify and Big Tech, essentially giving the streaming service an ultimatum, saying he’d leave if the platform started making it difficult for him to say what he wanted or host the show as he saw fit.
Speaking on that and the threat of censorship hanging over his head since the Neil Young nothingburger, Joe said:
“I will quit. If it gets to a point that I can’t do it anymore, where I have to do it in some sort of weird way where I walk on eggshells and mind my p’s and q’s, f–k that!”
Continuing his diatribe and saying he’d continue to host the podcast as he always has, doing what he thinks is fun and right rather than what crazy people want, he said:
“There’s more people poring over it but it’s the same thing. I do it the same way.
“If I become something different because it grew bigger, I will quit.”
Boom. And that’s no idle threat; while Joe hasn’t taken his wildly popular show and bolted yet, he might soon have cause to do so, as the streaming platform has already removed hundreds of non-PC “Joe Rogan Experience” episodes. The New York Post, reporting on that, notes:
Spotify has since slapped a content advisory on some of Rogan’s episodes containing questionable discussion of COVID-19.
During yet another public review, it also removed 113 episodes of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” namely those featuring interviews with far-right pundits, such as Milo Yiannopoulos and Proud Boys associate Gavin McInnes.
Still, Rogan hasn’t left yet or said he would, so perhaps he’s okay with those episode removals. However, his “I will quit” threat is one that should send a shiver down the spine of Spotify executives: Rogan is wildly popular, far more popular than they are, and a squabble between him and them could do major damage to the platform.
In any case, Spotify isn’t the only tech platform Rogan has attacked recently. He also went on the offensive against Big Tech during a discussion with ex-Apple and Facebook engineer Antonio García Martinez.
Speaking about such Big Tech companies, Rogan first said that “For someone from the outside, we look at it and say: ‘How are those fucking places run?’”
Then, after saying that, he said that had a friend who worked for one of the big tech companies. Remarking upon her perspective, he said:
“The way she described it to me was, ‘It is utter madness.’ The lunatics are running the asylum to a certain extent because there’s a lot of people working inside the company now that legitimately are mentally ill and they consider themselves activists.”
Not only that, but, according to his friend, the Big tech companies placate the woke complainers “because they’re a certain percentage of the population that works for the company, and they’re the loudest, and they oftentimes don’t get work done.”
Sounds about right. Big Tech was just put on notice: Rogan will walk away if he needs to.
