Desperate Libs Try to Stop MTG Yet Again

For all their portrayals of conservative firebrand Marjorie Taylor Greene, the Representative from Georgia who’s one of former President Trump’s staunchest defenders in the House of Representatives, they’re obviously quite worried about her.

Why’s that obvious? Because they keep trying to stop her. First they stripped her of her committee assignments, trying to stop her from having any influence in the House. Now they’re coming after her ability to run from office, trying to make it impossible for her to be elected again.

USA Today, describing the legal challenge, reports that:

A group of voters in Georgia is seeking to block U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s eligibility to seek reelection, arguing that she helped facilitate the Capitol riot.

A challenge, filed Thursday with the office of Georgia’s secretary of state office, claims Greene is not eligible under the 14th amendment to the U.S. Constitution because, allegedly, “before, on, and after January 6, 2021, Greene voluntarily aided and engaged in an insurrection to obstruct the peaceful transfer of presidential power, disqualifying her from serving as a Member of Congress.”

They’re citing the 14th Amendment as their cause of action, using it to try to keep her from office because section three of the amendment, passed after the close of the Civil War, provides that:

No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

Of course, in citing that amendment they’re relying on the court to find that MTG, in supporting Trump, “engaged in insurrection” on January 6th when a few FBI agents and QAnon crazies wandered around the Capitol.

It’s unlikely that argument will succeed, as a similarly-minded group of leftists tried it in North Carolina as a way of keeping firebrand congressman Madison Cawthorne from running again, something that the court system there struck down. The judge in that case found that, according to WRAL:

Chief District Court Judge Richard Myers said he couldn’t allow the challenge, filed by attorneys looking to label the first-term Republican as an insurrectionist who should be legally barred from the ballot, to move forward. The courts, Myers said, must protect the soapbox, the ballot box and the jury box.

So, unless a judge in Georgia has a wildly different viewpoint, it’s unlikely that the leftist attempt to stop MTG from even running again will work. If they want her out then they can win at the ballot box.
