BREAKING: SCOTUS Delivers Update on Justice Thomas

Recently, it was announced that Justice Clarence Thomas rock-ribbed conservative Supreme Court Justice, was hospitalized. The Economist’s Steven Mazie, reporting on the news in a tweet, shared the Supreme Court announcement and said that:

“Justice Clarence Thomas was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington D.C., on Friday evening after experiencing flu-like symptoms. He underwent tests, was diagnosed with an infection, and is being treated with intravenous antibiotics,” the statement continued. “His symptoms are abating, he is resting comfortably, and he expected to be released from the hospital in a day or two.”

The statement itself, describing what was going on with Justice Thomas’ condition, said that:

Justice Clarence Thomas was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C., on Friday evening after experiencing flu-like symptoms. He underwent tests, was diagnosed with an infection, and is being treated with intravenous antibiotics. His symptoms are abating, he is resting comfortably, and he expects to be released from the hospital in a day or two.”

Since that March 20th announcement, however, there’s been little news about Justice Thomas’ condition, other than that leftists were cheering his poor health. So, because little else has come out, America hasn’t learned whether the initial prediction that Thomas would spend only a day or two in the hospital.

Perhaps because of that lack of information, the Supreme Court just released an update, though it declined to confirm or deny whether Justice Thomas had been released from the hospital or not. As the AP reports:

The Supreme Court declined to say Wednesday whether 73-year-old Justice Clarence Thomas remains in the hospital, though he had been expected to be released by Tuesday evening.

However, it appears that Thomas is at least well enough to keep up with the case load of the Supreme Court, as the AP reports that while he didn’t attend Wednesday’s hearings he is reviewing the transcripts and briefs:

The court heard arguments Wednesday morning and Chief Justice John Roberts said, as he has for the past two days, that while Thomas was not present he would participate in the case by reviewing the arguments’ transcript and briefs. Roberts said Thomas was “unable to be present today” without explanation.

In addition to being a good man who should be prayed for regardless, Thomas’ health is important given the current makeup of the court.

Right now, sits on the Court’s 6-3 conservative majority. In that, he’s alongside Chief Justice Roberts along with Judges Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, and Samuel Alito. He is, however, one of the most conservative judges on the bench, with Alito being perhaps a close second. The others are somewhat conservative, but generally a good bit less so than Thomas and Alito.

So, if he’s out of the court for a long time with the flu or doesn’t recover, the resulting 5-4 shift could mean more than the numbers indicate, as the conservative side would lose one of its staunchest members with him hgone.
