Senate Minority Leader and infamous RINO recently attacked the RNC for rebuking Cheney and Kinzinger and, in the same statement, slandered the January 6th protesters, calling them violent insurrectionists and saying:
We all were here. We saw what happened. It was a violent insurrection for the purpose of trying to prevent the peaceful transfer of power after a legitimately certified election, from one administration to the next. That’s what it was.
[…]The issue is whether or not the RNC should be, sort of, singling out members of our party who may have different views from the majority. That’s not the job of the RNC.”
While many Republicans shied away from openly attacking McConnell after he made those comments, Trump’s closest allies jumped right in and started swinging.
For example, Boris Epshteyn, longtime Trump adviser and frequent guest on Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast, told Bannon:
“Mitch McConnell is done in the Republican Party. You need to realize it. Nobody wants to see Mitch McConnell around anymore. It’s over Mitch, it’s over.”
Another Bannon guest, conservative firebrand and freshman Congressman Madison Cawthorne said that “We do need to get rid of these establishment go-along to get-along Republicans.” He went on to argue that the “boat is sinking” and said that “it’s time to save the Republic.”
Similarly, conservative author and show host Mark Levin tore into McConnell for attacking conservatives and defending RINOs on his own show, saying:
“The sleazy left and the sleazy RINOs [Republicans in name only] seem to have a lot in common, don’t they? Mitch McConnell condemning the Republican National Committee for censuring Cheney and Kinzinger while behind the scenes and closed doors, he threatens his own members if they don’t fall in line.”
Trump himself, never one to shy away from conflict and rhetorical beatdowns, released a statement slamming McConnell, who he called an “Old Crow.” In the statement, he said:
“For the Old Crow Mitch McConnell to say that the RNC should not censure walking Democrat sound bites, Liz Cheney and Cryin’ Adam Kinzinger, is so against what Republicans are about.
It’s not as bad as the two-month extension he gave the Democrats when they were ready to fold, but the censure of Cheney and Kinzinger is a good and very appropriate thing to do as it pertains to our great Republican Party!”
Those statements represent a growing rift in the GOP between the MAGA side and the old guard Republicans. On one side are the populists, people like Trump and Cawthorne that want to win and actually do what it takes to get there. On the other side is the old guard, which is much tamer and speaks of “conservative principles” as frequently as it loses elections.
As the saying goes, “Show me a good loser, and I’ll show you a loser.” The Old Guard is full of losers. The populists are full of knife-fighters that will win once let off the chain. It’s time to push out losers like McConnell and let the MAGA crowd lose on the leftists.
