Biden Rejects Plan for Military Action Against Iran, But War Might Still Be On the Table

A concerning news story I reported on recently was that the Israel Lobby, including Israeli diplomats, is pushing Biden to take military action against Iran in response to Iranian intransigence during nuclear negotiations.

In the view of the Israelis and their American lobbyist and interest group allies, America needs to strike Iran because it refuses to negotiate to their satisfaction.

Luckily, Biden, like Trump, is apparently uninterested in war with Iran. According to ZeroHedge, Biden rejected Israeli requests for a concrete plan of attack against Iran. That article further reports that:

the “Israeli delegation that recently visited Washington accused the United States of making concessions to Iran during the Vienna talks without getting anything in return.” And crucially, Sky News Arabia adds this to its reporting: “The Biden administration warned of the danger of Israel taking any unilateral military action against Iran.”

However, just because the US is uninterested doesn’t mean that war with Iran won’t occur. As Israel has made clear in the past, it is willing to take unilateral action against Iran if the US refuses to get further drawn into Middle Eastern affairs.

So, even if Brandon holds firm and refuses to send American troops to die for yet another Middle Eastern dispute, there still could be violence and bloodshed, only between Israel and Iran rather than American and Iran.

Furthermore, while Biden has rejected calls for concrete plans of action to take against Iran, the Jerusalem Post is reporting that an attack isn’t completely off the table, saying that:

Defense Minister Benny Gantz updated American officials that he has set a deadline for when the IDF will need to complete preparations for an attack against Iran.
The Americans did not voice opposition to the Israeli preparations when presented with the date by Gantz on Thursday, a senior diplomatic source said the following day.
“There was no veto,” the source said.
[…]State Department Spokesperson Ned Price commented on Thursday on US-Israel discussions of alternative ways to counter the Iranian nuclear threat if negotiations in Vienna collapse.

“I wouldn’t want to speak to what we might be contemplating if the path to diplomacy toward a mutual return to compliance isn’t viable in the near term,” Price said. “But we are discussing those alternatives. We are discussing those options with our close partners, with our close allies, and that includes with the Israelis. We have already had good discussions with the Israelis about the path forward, and how we can work together to ensure that Iran is never able to acquire a nuclear weapon.”
So, America hasn’t vetoed attack plans and “alternatives” are on the table. That means a strike is still on the back burner, even if an attack plan was declined, for now.
While it remains to be seen what will end up happening, as the diplomatic logjam could be broken or anything else could happen, it appears that war is slightly less likely, but still potentially on the horizon.
